Tiara "Yarra Rai" Soemawilaga, was born in Canberra, Australia. Before she started singing, her mother enrolled her into a classical piano class at the age of 4. She knew she wanted to be a performer since she was little, after she started watching 'Kids Incorporated' (an American children’s musical performance program).
Rai moved to Indonesia when she was 7. Within a year of her arrival, she started taking a vocal course and had joined numerous singing competitions. She has been singing publicly since she was 8 years old. She stopped taking piano lessons when she was 9, because she enjoyed singing more. However, at the age of 15 she decided to get her fingers back on the piano and took private lessons, which she focused on for a year; hence she could sing and play the piano at the same time.
In 2005, she was one step away from making it into the top 12 finalists of one of Indonesia's biggest reality television singing competitions. Although she didn't make it back then, it didn't discourage her from singing. By 2008, she had experienced a lot in the music industry, from being a backup singer for Pandji Pragiwaksono and performing various times in some well known television shows. She worked on jingles for television commercials with Lawrence "Larry" Aswin (a music producer; who is also affiliated with SOVA). She engrossed heaps of knowledge by observing the process of music production and somehow along the way she came up with her own style and started producing remake cover songs that she uploaded on SoundCloud.
In 2014, she had the opportunity to perform live with SOVA at Djakarta Warehouse Project and Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival, which was held last year.
Rai's signature singing style is mostly R&B/Soul. Her music influences are Kelly Rowland, Destiny's Child, Jazmine Sullivan, Lalah Hathaway, Alicia Keys, Marsha Ambrosius, Jamie Foxx, Bobby V, and Maxwell.
